Mulberry: a nutritional powerhouse

 Mulberries are known for their appetizing sweet-tart fruit. It is luscious whether it is fresh or dried.

 It is the evergreen woody perennial tree. It belongs to the Moraceae plant. It is widely cultivated and known by ancient civilizations worldwide.

Mulberries are widely grown in the warm region. The tree extends up to 10 feet tall per year. And it reaches approximately 30 feet at its maturity stage. Mulberries have several species, such as Red mulberry, black mulberry, and white mulberry.

 It is widely used for medicinal purposes such as blood tonic, dizziness, and more.

 Mulberries are berries that are available twice a year for a short period – from March to May and October to November.

There are three common varieties of mulberry:

Black Mulberry: The scientific name of Black mulberry is Morus Nigra. Black mulberry is widely cultivated. It can be grown up to 40 feet tall. The leaves of the mulberry tree are between 2-4 inches wide and 4 – 8 inches long.

Black mulberries are beneficial for vitamin c. It is especially used to treat cold, and eye infections.

Red Mulberries: Another name for Red mulberry is Morus Rubra. These mulberries are the only species that are indigenous to the united states. It contains protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. The red mulberry leaves help regulate blood pressure levels and improve the digestive system.

Red mulberries are sweet and large. It is the favorite food of a few birds and mammals like squirrels. The leaves of this tree can be grown between 3-4 inches wide and 3-7 inches long.

White Mulberry: White mulberry is also known as Morus Alba. These mulberries can be grown up to 35-70 feet. The incredible heart-shaped leaves can be grown up to 12 inches in length.

White mulberries are beneficial for treating diabetes and improving high cholesterol levels.

The wood of the white mulberry tree is very durable and flexible. It is used to make hockey sticks, rackets, and more.

Benefits of Mulberries.

Mulberries have numerous health benefits.

  1. Mulberries contain a dietary fiber that helps our body to proper digestion.
  2. It contains antioxidants that are beneficial to improving blood circulation.
  3. Mulberries give a good amount of vitamin c, which is beneficial for our body to improve the immune system.
  4. The combination of calcium, iron and vitamin k is the pack of nutrients that is good for strong bone tissues.
  5. Mulberries are also good for liver health as they contain iron.
  6. The leaves, bark, root, and fruit of this tree are used for medicinal purposes also.

 

Care and maintenance of mulberries:

Light: Mulberry trees germinate in the sun as well as in partial shade conditions.

Soil: Mulberry trees grow well in a variety of soils. They are adaptable and deal with loam, clay, and sandy soil.

Water: Mulberry trees are drought tolerant. In the beginning, water your plant regularly for its better or healthy root system. Once it is established, the tree should receive its water necessity from the environment. In the dry period, ensure that at least 1 inch deep of soil is wet every week.

If the roots feel dry, the fruit of the tree will drop before it matures.

Fertilization: Mulberry trees are not that demandable. They do not require any fertilization during the first year of their growth. It might be feasible to wait for the second year of its growth before fertilizing them. It all depends upon the soil test.

Once it is grown, use a balanced diet for your tree. Fertilize your plant with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10 in early summers and late winters.

 

 

Note: The most interesting thing is that the leaves of white mulberry are a good source of food for silkworms. These fresh leaves hold hydration that fulfills the need of water for silkworms. 2500 silkworms are required for making a pound of silk.
